Let's Dish: How to Make an Old Fashioned

Has there ever been a drink that’s stirred up (oh yes, pun fully intended) so much strident opinion? This classic cocktail (there’s even debate around whether it should be called a cocktail) invites all sorts of controversy, from the glass it’s served in to the absence or presence of water or rocks. There’s even a whole website devoted to it. On October 5th, Harris Thomas of Hickory Chair was stationed at Hudson, whipping up his take. Ready to give it a try?

The basics:

  • 1 barspoon of simple syrup (Unflavored! On that, there seems to be agreement.)

  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters

  • 2 ounces bourbon

  • Orange twist

  • And don’t forget your bar tools.

Let’s go:

  1. Combine the bitters and simple syrup in a highball glass. Swirl so glass is coated.

  2. Add the bourbon. Stir.

  3. Add one large ice cube (which will dilute more slowly than smaller ones).

  4. Stir until chilled, about 30 seconds.

  5. Now add a proper orange twist, using a vegetable peeler, and insuring that the orange oils make it into your drink.

  6. Silence your phone and enjoy.

p.s. Added while drinking, you might like to peruse Hickory Chair. Hudson has 25% off all week thanks to our visit from Harris. Contact info@hudsonboston.com to order.
