Interior Designer Jill Goldberg is finding that there are worse things in life than opening a shop next door to Boston’s acclaimed South End Buttery. Having delectable cupcakes and gourmet coffee at your fingertips might be dangerous for the waistline, but it’s great for company morale.
Jill (and her chocolate lab mix, Love) have become regular patrons at the cafe since opening Hudson, her home-furnishings shop in Boston’s South End neighborhood. “It’s a great location,” she says. “I’m tempted to just move into the shop.”
Upon opening its doors in September 2006, Hudson blended seamlessly with the South End’s historical-yet-hip vibe. It’s chockablock with updated classics such as fauteuil chairs that are upholstered in Kelly Wearstler’s “Imperial Trellis” fabric, or flea-market finds interspersed with more current pieces from Oly, Bobo Intriguing Objects, and Denyse Schmidt. There are also exclusive items such as artwork from Damien Hoar de Galvan and one-of-a-kind “By Hudson” pillows mad from vintage feed bags.
Jill has only one simple rule when hunting down items for the shop: “I buy only what I would put in my own home.” And while the shop has definite East Coast attitude, Jill’s past life as an actress in Los Angeles weaves its way into the mix as well. “I strive for an easy-living style that combines classic New England with Casual California,” she says.
“I just throw everything into the mixing bowl to see what I’ll get,” she notes. “It usually works.”
